What is the meaning of GATE Score Validity?

GATE Score Validy

A question that arises in the mind of every beginner who aspires to break GATE - Engineering Graduate Aptitude Test is What is the meaning of valid GATE score ?

The GATE 2021 exam is coming up, still many applicants are confused about the real meaning of the validity of the GATE score. So, let's take some time to first understand the concept of validity of the GATE score.

The word VALIDITY, when used with the GATE test score, becomes a very confusing term. It has two parts. The term validity when used with the GATE score means

  • A GATE qualifying score, that means that your scores on the GATE test must be more than or at least equal to the qualifying marks.
  • PERIOD OF TIME (usually in years) for which institutions accept the GATE score.

Let's explore these two meanings of the validity of the GATE score in more depth.

Valid GATE Score: A GATE Score Equal to or more than the Qualifying Marks

The Engineering Graduate Aptitude Test, also known as GATE, opens floodgates to various opportunities such as IISc, IIT, NIT, PSU Navratna / Maharatna recruitment, research-oriented organizations such as BARC / CSIR, higher studies in foreign universities, etc. . Every year thousands of students and professionals take the prestigious GATE test to make their dream come true by earning good grades and a rank in GATE.

Almost a month after the GATE test is taken, applicants receive their performance on the GATE Score Card. Each applicant earns a score known as a GATE score. This is the same score that applicants should produce while seeking admission / work in leading institutes and best UPMs in India.

Based on the highest score obtained in the exam, in different streams, a qualification score is established. Having a valid GATE score means that you must have earned at least grades equal to the qualifying grades.

GATE Score Validity: Time Period for which the GATE Score is accepted

Like all major tests, the GATE test is also taken every year. Applicants can take the exam as many times as they wish. This means that there are no restrictions on the number of GATE attempts. This raises an unavoidable question, namely, how long is the GATE scorecard valid?

A common understanding among applicants is that since GATE is held every year, the scorecard is valid for only one year. But this is not the case. GATE scorecards, like other important tests, are valid for a period of 3 years. Three years are counted from the year of issuance of the scorecard. However, this does not prevent an applicant from appearing on the GATE test again next year. If an applicant wishes to improve their score, then they are eligible to take the GATE test again next year. The scorecard issued in this next attempt will be valid for 3 years from that year.

It should also be CAREFULLY BEARED that in case a candidate has more than one valid GATE scorecard in any one year, they can use any of them to apply for admission to the desired institution. (For jobs at UPM, it's important to note that the GATE score is valid for one year only.)

Understanding the Concept

Let's better understand this concept by taking an example. Assume "R" appears on the GATE test in February 2020. You receive your scorecard one month after the test. Let's call this scorecard GATE 2020 - SC20. SC20 is valid until the year 2022. This means that SC20 can be used to apply for admissions in 2020, 2021 and 2022 for additional studies. For PSU jobs, SC20 will be valid for PSU recruitment in 2020 only.

Now suppose "R" wants to improve your score and appears on the GATE 2021 exam. You receive the scorecard in March 2021. Let's call this scorecard SC21. SC21 is valid for 3 years, that is until March 2023. This means that you can use this scorecard to apply for admissions in the years 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Now, it should be noted that in the years 2021 and 2022, "R" has two valid scorecards. Therefore, in these two years, 'R' can use any scorecard of his choice (usually the one with the highest score) to apply for admission to the desired stream at the desired institution.

GATE is well known for its unpredictable and deceptive nature. Similarly, the GATE 2021 test will also be very challenging with the introduction of a new question pattern and changes to the syllabus. All applicants need to prepare well for a valid GATE score for admission to leading institutes in India and jobs at PSUs.

To apply for admission to the best institutes in the country, a candidate must have the minimum score established by the respective institute.

The cut can be made separately for Master's and Doctoral programs. It should be carefully noted that different institutes have different cut-off scores. Applicants who have obtained a score greater than or equal to the cut-off score in their respective program and sequence may proceed to seek admission or scholarship, when applicable, at the institution.

GATE Cut-Off: An Example

Let's see an example for a better understanding. Suppose that in GATE 2021 the highest score that can be obtained on the test of any flow is 1000. The test is taken in February 2021. In March 2021 the results are reported. Let's consider only 2 streams in this example: Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. Based on the highest score obtained in Mechanical Engineering, suppose that institute "A" sets the cut-off score for admission to the Mechanical Engineering program at 850.

Similarly, based on the highest score obtained in Civil Engineering, the 'A' institute sets the cut-off score for admission to the Civil Engineering program at 750. Then, all students who want to apply for the Engineering course Mechanics in high school 'A' and have a GATE score, in the Mechanical Engineering role, greater than or equal to 850.

Similarly, for the Civil Engineering Course, all applicants who have a GATE score of 750 or higher, in the GATE Civil Engineering role, can apply for the Civil Engineering course at institute "A".

The rest of the applicants, in both streams, will not be able to apply since they do not have a VALID DOOR SCORE or the minimum score required for admission to the desired course at that institution.

It should be noted that the valid GATE score is also different for applicants in different categories. In each stream, it is the highest for general category applicants.

Some Professional Tips for GATE 2021 Aspirants to get a Valid GATE Score:

  1. Understand the concepts clearly. Answering the GATE questions requires applicants to be well versed in the concepts and not to memorize the content entirely.
  2. Find shorter methods for solving number questions. Questions must be solved with complete precision.
  3. Do not waste time. Time management is very important. Time is marks on the GATE test.
  4. Try the questions INTELLIGENTLY.
  5. First, try the section you are sure of.
  6. Read the questions carefully. Ignoring a piece of information or part of a question will cost you valuable points.
  7. Understand what is being asked of you. Many questions are crooked. They must be read several times. This will allow you to understand the questions correctly.
  8. Do not panic. Keep calm and answer the role.
  9. For best practice, appear for the mock tests in earnest. Take the tests as if you were taking the final exam.
